Why you need KRA clearance certificate?

KRA clearance certificate has lately become one of the most essential documents to have. Whether you are in business or in employment this certificate has become a requirement to get any public service jobs and government tenders. Without KRA clearance certificate you may be barred from doing certain this in the country
To get a KRA clearance certificate you will need to have cleared all your tax matters including payment of any outstanding taxes, penalties and interest. The certificate is only issued at your Kenya Revenue Tax station, and your tax station is the one registered in your PIN based on your tax locality.

Who is eligible to get a KRA clearance certificate?

To get this document you will need to have attained 18 years and have an identification card (ID). You cannot get this certificate unless you have a PIN number. In addition to the PIN number you will need to have an updated i-Tax page.

If you still have the old PIN certificate you will need to update your i-Tax page to get an account in which you will make the application.

The certificate cannot be applied through someone’s else account, the compliance will have your name hence applied through your account. However, you can get assist from someone who is experienced on how to apply. You can also visit i-Tax center Huduma center to get assistance on the same issue.

Previously before I tax became fully operational you needed fill an application form which you would take to your tax station to get your certificate. Since 2014, the application forms are no longer needed because you can apply for the certificate through i-Tax. You will not need to attach any document when making the application

How to apply for tax compliance/ KRA clearance certificate online

The process of applying tax compliance/ KRA clearance certificate is very easy and it only takes few seconds. On the other hand it may take longer to get this certificate as the whole process of approval will require someone at KRA to check the status of your tax matters then approval.

If you have no pending tax issues it may take fewer days to get your tax compliance. If it takes longer to get an approval or rejection notice you can visit your station to check on the matter.

If you have recently applied for a PIN in case of student or new business the process may be easy.

To apply follow the following steps

1. Visit : https://itax.kra.go.ke

2. Enter your PIN and password

3. Once you login on the top menu, click on ‘certificates’ then choose apply for tax compliance

4. You will be required to specify the reason why you need the KRA clearance certificate.

5. Then click submit.

6. You will get an acknowledgement number and a notice will be emailed to your account.

7. Note that acknowledgement number because you might need it if you will need to follow up your application

8. Keep in mind that if your application is not approved you will get a notice in your email explaining the reason why the application was rejected.

9. Sometimes the rejection is not based on tax arrears; it could be an issue of reconciliation so you will need to visit your station

10. Once you have solved all the issues that resulted to your application rejection you will need to reapply again.

To check the validity of KRA clearance certificate you will need to visit i-Tax but this time you will not need to login, on the i-Tax home page click on TCC checker and enter the certificate number then verify.

It is possible to get an invalid tax compliance, so be sure to verify one especially if you are the one requiring someone to bring in the certificate.

Currently the validity period of KRA clearance certificate is one year; previously it was valid for six months. If you are in business you will need to apply for tax compliance yearly for your business to have government tenders or get any public pre-qualification
