Error 0x00000709 usually occurs when you are unable to setup your new printer or a different printer as your default printer other than the one that is already setup as default printer. Normally, this problem is caused by anomaly in the registry settings that prioritize the earlier printer to be the default one.

If setting up the default printer and suddenly you face an issue or an error message that says “operation could not be completed, error 0X00000709”, you have to double check the name of your printer and ensure that the printer is connected to the network.

How to back up the registry
Open registry, After opening it, Click File > Export > Name the registry file and click Save.
For restoring from backup, open registry editor again, click File > Import > select the file you exported earlier.

Steps to fix Error 0X00000709

Method 1: Modify Registry
Click the Start button situated at the bottom left and type regedit, this will list the result in the search pane, right click regedit and select “Run As Administrator” to be directed to the registry editor.
Alternative, Press Windows button and R simultaneously (Windows + R), then your will get a run box here. Type “Regedit” within the box and then click on the OK button. Click on the run as administrator to be directed to the registry editor.



Navigate to the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows.


NB. When you open the folder tree, every folder is actually a subset of another folder, but the main path is the name mentioned above. When you expand the folder tree within the registry editor, you have to right click on the Windows folder and then again click on permissions.

After you click on the permissions, you will see a dialog box where you can check for the full control and tick on Allow option. Click on Apply and OK.

Close the registry editor and then restart the computer.

Method 2
After you have completed the steps until the folder tree on method 1, select the device key from the right pane. Right click on it and then select “modify”. Here you can change the values and also the name of your printer.
NB: Remember that you can only change the name of your printer and not the after part of it.


You will be prompted with the “cannot edit device” message dialog. Click OK and then again follow the permissions steps as mentioned in method one. Close the registry editor and restart the device. The issue will be resolved.
